Fiona Ní Gháibhín - An Meangadh Mór
We spoke with Fiona Ní Gháibhín (An Meangadh Mór ‘) ahead of our upcoming Summer BBQ.
Fiona is a DJ on Raidió na Life since 2007 and will be with us on the night to provide some excellent music.
You have been working with Raidió na Life for a few years, what are your favourite things about the job?
I have been working with Raidió na Life on a voluntary basis since 2007. The biggest thing for me is that it is enjoyable presenting music shows through the medium of Irish. The team in Raidió na Life are very nice, friendly and helpful and everyone is always welcome.
Tell us about your musical style, what do you like?
I have a very broad taste in music, but if I had to choose, electronic music would be my choice.
What is the strangest thing that has happened to you on air?
Not weird but years ago the comedian Dara Ó Briain was listening to my show and he tweeted about the excellent music that was to be heard on An Meangadh Mór, that made me so happy!
What should members of Gréasán Gaeilge na hEarnála Poiblí be expecting when you will be the DJ at our Summer BBQ on 11 June?
Expect to be dancing and to hear new music that you’ve never heard before.
In terms of your travels, I believe you were in South Korea, amongst other places abroad. What place made the biggest impression on you and why?
Japan made a huge impression on me because the culture is so interesting, the food is delicious, there are nice restaurants and excellent music.
What should members of Gréasán Gaeilge na hEarnála Poiblí be expecting when you will be the DJ at our Summer BBQ on 11 June?
Expect to be dancing and to hear new music that you’ve never heard before.
What is the biggest change that you are seeing in the music world at the moment?
The biggest change that I see is the amount of issuing. It is unbelievable! Even AI creating music that sounds like music people created.
What connections do you have with the Irish language community and the music world?
I have good connections with the Irish language community through working with Raidió na Life. I have worked with lots of musicians and artists; Róis, Naoise Ó Cairealláin from Kneecap, Séamus Barra Ó Súilleabháin (aka Súil Amháin), Louisa Ní hÉadeáin (Dopamean Girl) and lots more. There are musicians and bands in with me on my show from time to time and it’s great to be ale to gibe that platform to musicians. It usually encourages them to use their ‘cúpla focal’ and that is good enough for me ;)
